-Speech when I stepped down as President of Fudan University.
Yang
Dear Director Yu Yunlin, Vice Minister Du Yubo, Minister Xu Zezhou, distinguished leaders, teachers, students and alumni at home and abroad,
First of all, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Academician Xu Ningsheng who came to Fudan! I believe that under the leadership of the Party Committee of Fudan University, Zhu Zhiwen and Xu Ningsheng, the future of Fudan University will be even more brilliant. I have known Comrade Xu Ningsheng for a long time, so I am fully confident that Fudan will develop more brilliantly under his leadership.
Looking back on the past six years, we can use an idiom from China to describe it. It is called "blink of an eye", which is a white horse that flashes between the doors. But when I woke up, I found that it was not a white pony, but a zebra, and it was black first and then white stripes. A closer look reveals that this black stripe is still painted because it is actually a white pony. What's more, in the current Internet age, it is very convenient to paint, easy to paint black, and easy to paint white and red. However, no matter how you wipe it, the color it should have is still the original color. In a word, time flies for me. Perhaps, this feeling is a kind of truth. Because, if you feel that you are idle and have too much time to spend, if you are a "rich man" of time, then I'm afraid you may just live in fantasy.
Since September, Comrade Zhu Zhiwen has been the Party Secretary in Fudan for more than three years. I think this is the most comfortable three years of my work, and it is also the happiest and most enjoyable three years. More importantly, we have established a profound friendship. If it is more important, I think these three years will be an important turning point for Fudan. So here, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Comrade Zhu Zhiwen! At the same time, I also thank the teachers, students, staff and alumni of Fudan University! Of course, I still have a lot to thank, including the Ministry of Education and the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government for their support to Fudan.
I once said that Fudan is very important in my heart and is my spiritual home all my life. So as long as it is for the development of Fudan, I will definitely take the initiative to do something beneficial to Fudan. But more importantly, as long as I am asked to do or not to do something for the development of Fudan, I have no two words.
I also thought, what is really worth nostalgia? I thought for a moment, not money, because I can't bring money; Not status, status can be high or low; Not a position, there will always be ups and downs in the position; In particular, it is not a feeling of crowding round that should not exist in universities. I think this is the most vulgar. I think the only thing that is most worthy of nostalgia is that emotion, which is between colleagues, between teachers and students, and also includes feelings for family members. Especially as a Fudan person, this is a feeling for Fudan and a feeling for this country and nation.
When I first took office, I felt infinitely heavy, with both pressure and grim reality. But today, I feel extremely relaxed. I am very happy that I have a grandson and granddaughter during my tenure. So I just want to say that I just want to be a "grandfather of China people" in this land! Generally speaking, I keep this feeling deep in my heart and only visit generate when necessary!
I was born in a very poor peasant family, not a scholarly family, without any so-called family education, but the traditional and simple family education in China told me how to grasp one of my basic moral bottom lines. So I hate all forms of corruption, especially the corruption of intellectuals in colleges and universities, because corruption in colleges and universities will destroy the backbone of a nation. But Fudan needs to develop, and we need to look forward. Considering the overall situation, there are many things that have not been done, and many things should be done too late. But as the principal, I feel that I have done what I should do. As for the rest, I believe that "people are doing, and the sky is watching." All corrupt elements must have nowhere to run!
I made a promise to my superiors. I said that I would silently cooperate with the replacement of the principal of Fudan University. Today, at this moment, I feel that I can put it down and there is no need to "quietly".
I once made a solemn promise to the leaders, and I also want to make a solemn promise to all of you here. I will definitely support the work of Comrade Xu Ningsheng and Comrade Zhu Zhiwen, because they all came to Fudan for the development of Fudan, not to mention those Fudan people who are born and raised here.
Of course, at this moment, I have many people to thank and many things to thank, but I think I will leave them here. Because excessive gratitude will only hurt this solemn moment.
I'm not going to review my past work, because today is happy event in Fudan. What I have done has been forgotten, and I shouldn't feel nostalgic or sad. Because, China's higher education needs the continuous efforts of several generations to achieve greater results.
At this moment, I don't want to talk about my expectations for Fudan University's work in the next few years, because I'm quite sure that President Xu Ningsheng and Secretary Zhu Zhiwen already know.
Therefore, I just want to end my speech today with one sentence from my inaugural speech. When I took office, I used the motto of Compton, president of MIT:
"When you leave every camp, it should be more beautiful than when you first came."
Did I do it? Or is it partially completed? Or didn't do it at all? Or is it getting worse? . I can only say that I tried! I can't judge myself here It is my patience to let history answer.
May the future of Fudan be even better!
Thank you!
