The translation of Tale of Genji is hard to say who is good and who is accurate, and they don't understand the original text. Even if I know Japanese, I'm afraid it's hard to understand. Modern Japanese can hardly understand it. I am an art student. I learned a little Japanese and forgot to go to Java a long time ago. I know nothing about literature. I just want to say a few words as an ordinary reader. I have the first edition with illustrations by Qin Long. A few years ago, I tried to read chapters such as Erect, Bridge of Dreams, and found it difficult to enter a happy reading state. This is mainly caused by the slow narrative style of the article, and the story is probably not strong. Feng introduced the book in the postscript, saying: The original text is quaint and simple, which is similar to the Analects of Confucius and Tan Gong in China, so it is not suitable for vernacular translation. Today, I tried to translate in this style, but unfortunately, I can't express the style of the original text. This shows that Feng still has reservations about his translation. In fact, his views are similar to those of Junichiro Tanizaki. Junichiro Tanizaki said that it is necessary to copy the features of the original text and keep a little "difficult" and "obscure" of the original text. What Junichiro Tanizaki said is that there are many Chinese characters and old pseudonyms in the original [original story], and "obscure" probably means too many honorifics and modesty, which puzzles modern people. English translation does not consider these, is it better to understand? At least Kawabata Yasunari was deeply moved and fell in love with Japanese literature from reading the English version of the original story. After all, it's much easier for me to watch the movie [A Thousand Years of Love] (adapted from the original) than to watch the original.

It is worth noting that the new version of Wen Feng's translation of [The Source of Stories] was a great failure, because it deleted the illustrations drawn by Qin Long. This new book is dozens of times more expensive than the old one. I don't know what humanities think. Qin Long's [Original Story] illustration is also a masterpiece in the history of China's book illustration, which has been widely praised. Moreover, Japanese illustrations of past dynasties are as double-walled as books, and they are inexhaustible good materials for painters of past dynasties. This is also a common phenomenon in today's publishing industry: the original excellent illustrations are either not available or the pictures are not satisfactory, and equally frightening is that the prices are ridiculously expensive. This reminds me of my favorite illustration of Kent [Moby Dick], and it took me three years to make it more perfect and wonderful. I feel that the excellent illustration of the original story is very helpful to enter the original story.

There should be a complete story in the world, and the translator doesn't know who it is. I don't like this binding. It's too thick to read. As far as reading is concerned, it is better to divide it into three volumes. The progress of modern science and technology makes binding and design more tacky and inconvenient. Modern books are hard to take down without your hands. If some glue on your back is too thick, you must open it hard. It is basically impossible to spread it out on the table. Where is the pleasure of reading? Unless it's hardcover.

Zhou Zuoren and Feng Zikai are both my favorite writers, and they have translated a large number of ancient Japanese literary works upon request. Zhou Zuoren translated Pillow Grass and Pingjia Story (the first six volumes); Feng Zikai translated yuanshi county Tale, Luowa Tale, Ise Tale and Bamboo Tale. They tried to understand Japanese ancient literature and translated it with good intentions. As an ordinary reader, I can only express my deep gratitude from my heart. It's hard to say who is good and who is bad. I have neither the motivation nor the heart to explore and compare. If there is a forest version of "The Source of Living Water", I am willing to double it. After all, the writing styles of male and female authors are very different. As Donald King said, "It is easier for foreigners to understand the meaning of (the original story)." I think this mainly refers to the vivid characters and stories that [the original story] shows us. Although the original story translated by Feng Zikai is not completely beautiful, what does it matter?

Don't you think all translations are like this? Just like Ulysses in Humanities and Yilin, people argue inappropriately. Who knows the translator's heart? They translate with good intentions, often for a word, a word, and go to great lengths to compare and scrutinize, but also for a good inspiration and joy, which is unknown to readers. Not long ago, I saw an interview with Yang Yi's daughter (both husband and wife are translators and the daughter is a painter) on TV. She mentioned her mother's bitter translation of Wuthering Heights, thus realizing her wish to visit Wuthering Heights on her behalf. In the postscript of Wuthering Heights, Yang Yi wrote: One night, it was stormy outside the window, and a gust of wind roared by, and the rain fell on the glass window, just like Catherine was crying outside the window and told me to open the window. The house where I live used to be a desolate garden. At this time, I almost felt that I was in an old house near the Yorkshire moor. I read Wuthering Heights unconsciously-suddenly inspiration fell from the sky, and I excitedly wrote down the four characters Wuthering Heights. This Wuthering Heights is much better than Wuthering Heights translated in Taiwanese, which shows how rare the word "Wuthering" is.

Many translations often surprise readers of the original text. It's really not easy to translate a famous book well. We only ask the translator to follow the original text as much as possible, at least it won't surprise people.
