Shen Congwen's editorial thoughts are mainly: running a publication far away from business and politics, correcting the attitude of writers, fighting against the crisis of literature and aesthetics, and advocating the freedom and independence of literature. In the early 1930s, the Literary Supplement edited by Wu Yi became less and less popular with readers and was too academic. Hu and Zhang began to think about changing this situation. If they want to change their style, they must hire new people. So in 1933, Yang Zhensheng and Shen Congwen, two writers who once enjoyed a good reputation in the literary world, received an invitation to adapt the Literary Supplement. Shen Congwen is a legend. He was indifferent to fame and fortune all his life and persistently built his own "small temple of human nature". He has both the humility and elegance of traditional intellectuals and the passion and wildness of ethnic minorities in western Hunan. Shen Congwen's school education is limited to a few years in a private school. Military life enriched his cultural knowledge and honed his will. /kloc-at the age of 0/9, he was dissatisfied with his life at that time and went to Peiping alone. When he first arrived in Beijing, Shen Congwen suffered a lot. The road to study is very hard, and the road to literary creation is even more bumpy. With the help, care and support of Hu Shi, Yu Dafu, Xu Zhimo and other predecessors, Shen Congwen gradually succeeded. 1In the summer of 933, Shen Congwen resigned as a teacher of Qingdao University and went to Beijing to compile Chinese textbooks for primary and secondary schools for students in North China at the invitation of Yang Zhensheng. In September of the same year, Yang Zhensheng and Shen Congwen were officially employed as the editor-in-chief of Ta Kung Pao Supplement.
Ta Kung Pao? The literary supplement 65438 was officially published on Wednesday, September 23rd, 0933. In the upper right corner of the page, there are four vertical bold mastheads: Literary Supplement. Below the masthead is the number of issues, and below it is the communication office: No.55 Xixie Street, Xidan, Beiping, or the editorial department of the literary supplement of Tianjin Ta Kung Pao. In order to meet the reading habits of readers, the whole layout is still vertical, all in vernacular Chinese, marked with new punctuation, and punctuation points are below the words. This makes the layout look generous, beautiful and elegant.
In the first issue of Literature and Art Supplement, several articles were published: Pig, Deer and Beaver by Qi Ming (Zhou Zuoren), Crispy Skin by Bian, Tired by Yang Zhensheng, Begging for Rain by Shen Congwen ((postscript)). As you can see, this inaugural issue has no preface and no special explanation. But Yang Zhensheng's Begging for Rain played a leading role. The author compared the literary world at that time to a dry field, and thought that the author should have his own true feelings about life and not blindly follow the trend; Works should reflect ordinary real life as much as possible, and don't talk big or empty words; Writers should have a down-to-earth attitude in their creation and not seek fame and fortune. This shows the status of literary supplement and its requirements for literary works. In practical work, although Yang Zhensheng participated in planning and soliciting contributions, the specific editing work was mainly carried out by Shen Congwen. Literature Supplement is the publication that Shen Congwen participated in for the longest time, and devoted a lot of his efforts. By editing this supplement, Shen Congwen United the northern literati, and with the support of these colleagues, Shen Congwen's editing road can be so brilliant.
Shen Congwen's personality is quite consistent with Ta Kung Pao. He has always regarded himself as a "farmer", adhered to the principle of democratic politics, did not join any party or political group, and adhered to literary freedom. Hu said, "We have always advocated academic freedom. Within the scope of political permission, various schools can coexist, express their opinions and discuss with each other; For the sake of national rejuvenation, seeking common ground while reserving differences ... Just because we are not government agencies, we are objective and fair, and we can give play to our free thoughts. " The idea of running a new Ta Kung Pao is very consistent with his, and their cooperation has a stable ideological foundation.
Literary supplement is attached to the newspaper, and its editing policy is bound to be influenced by the news, timeliness and popularity of the newspaper. Restricted by newspaper tendency, style and value orientation; Limited by newspaper layout and publication time. In the view of literature, Shen Congwen emphasized the artistic value of his works, tried his best to exclude the influence of politics and commerce in order to safeguard the broadest sense of literary freedom, and tried his best to revive the enlightenment spirit of the May 4th new culture to promote social progress and national development. Therefore, when editing Literature Supplement, Shen Congwen takes the development of literature and art itself as the purpose and keeps its purity. Shen Congwen published many articles on literary theory in this journal, and repeatedly expounded this view. Shen Congwen said in On Shanghai School: "Literary publications should be like a school in China, giving readers what is necessary for society." Editors should "control the manuscript fee to the works of some new writers who feel the destruction of this nation and find a way out." Lin also said: "Can we admit one thing frankly? The encouragement of creation often depends on publications to spread its results, bask in the sun, and meet readers of the times. " They all try their best to make the publications more in line with the development needs of literature itself, free from interference and influence from other factors.
