Research background:

A language not only expresses facts, thoughts or events that represent similar world knowledge, but also reflects people's attitudes, beliefs and world views. People of different cultures have different understandings of the world around them, at least in the language they describe the world. There are great differences between languages, and these differences are related to the customs, behaviors and other important differences in the cultures where these languages are located. In a word, language is a mirror of culture.

When we learn a new word, we tend to look for its meaning in the word itself. However, due to cultural differences, the same word may cause different associations besides its dictionary meaning. In our daily life, color words are common examples of cultural differences in language use. In Chinese and English cultures, color words are also influenced by culture and are widely used in people's daily life.

Research significance:

Due to the cultural differences between the East and the West, the understanding of color words is different. Color words contain many deep meanings, implying different national feelings. Without considering the influence of cultural differences, it is difficult for us to understand the implied meaning of color words. The significance of this thesis lies in making people better understand color words, thus improving their communicative competence and avoiding cultural conflicts.

Research status:

The study of color words has long attracted the attention of linguists. The light of the objective world is the same as that of the whole human being, but different understandings of color words are often found in national languages of different times, different books or different geographical dialects. This proves that language is the result of human cognition, which is used to understand and express the objective world. When people of different groups understand and express the world cognitively, due to the differences in natural environment, social life and cultural traditions. Study the similarities and differences of color words in different languages. The same object can see how different cognitive terms show similarities and differences, and how social and cultural differences further expand semantic differences, which is of great significance to cognitive linguistics, comparative linguistics and cultural linguistics, as well as applied linguistics in second language teaching. ..

Research objectives:

I am writing this paper to help English learners better understand the cultural meaning of color words, improve their communicative competence and avoid cultural conflicts in the West.
