He proposed that basic courses and technical courses should aim at the characteristics of agricultural mechanization and agricultural machinery specialty, gradually establish a professional system, pay close attention to the construction of teaching materials, and strive to change the practice of simply copying the teaching materials of famous engineering colleges. Obviously, this is the right direction. 1964, Agricultural Mechanization College was cancelled, and Yu Youtai was transferred back to Northeast Agricultural College as the vice president. He continued to emphasize the idea of improving teaching quality, which played a positive role in streamlining the teaching content of basic courses.
In terms of scientific research, Yu Youtai organized a scientific research group, focusing on the characteristics of planting industry in Northeast China and the original animal-drawn farming equipment, and exploring the design method of establishing farming machinery system and working parts. This is the deepening and improvement of his idea of developing a "universal crop machine" under the auspices of the Provincial Institute of Agricultural Mechanization. In the mid-1950s, a large number of large and medium-sized flat cultivators from the Soviet Union were introduced to the northeast of China, which caused a "flat tillage dispute" in the agricultural field and was not unified until the 1960s. Yu Youtai advocated inheriting the fine tradition of long cropping and absorbing the advantages of flat cropping and deep tillage, and put forward the technical policy of combining long cropping with flat cropping. On the basis of field research and theoretical analysis, three papers on long-term farming machinery system were published in Journal of Agricultural Machinery of China. A soil tillage system combining flat turning, ridge tillage and subsoiling is put forward, and the idea and schematic diagram of building block design of hanging multifunctional ridge tillage machinery are pointed out, which points out the direction for the promotion of subsoiling and ridge tillage machinery design in the province in the future. He made a systematic study on two basic working parts of traditional farming, namely, triangular share and harrow core, and put forward design parameters and methods, which were adopted by production departments. He also initiated the theoretical research of soil tillage mechanics, and successively established two experimental soil tanks, large and small. 1965 enrolled graduate students with the main direction of soil tillage mechanics, but was interrupted by the "Cultural Revolution".
During the Cultural Revolution, he was labeled as a "gangster" and accepted criticism. After another three years, he jumped the queue and settled in the countryside. These tortures did not shake his desire to devote himself to agricultural mechanization at all. In the days when Lan Xiang Farm in Tangyuan County was isolated from labor, he personally realized the hardships of working in icy rice fields, so he repeatedly thought about the scheme of honing mechanized rice production, which was close to the framework of the square rack track automatic plow studied in Japan in the 1980s. When the Jianhua Brigade of Bayan County jumped the queue, he designed and improved the rake and corn seeder, and went to Harbin Agricultural Machinery Factory to participate in the manufacturing and assembly for more than two months.
