Why can you identify homosexuality?
Seeing a person in the crowd can tell whether he is gay or not. Why can you identify it? I'll tell you why we can identify homosexuals.

? Gay radar? Refers to the ability to distinguish whether a person is gay or straight according to indirect information, such as a person's language patterns or actions. All kinds of people will open themselves up for various purposes? Gay radar? . For example, homosexuals will use this to interpret a person's flirting, while straight men and straight women may just want to know? Who's Kiki? . Is this built-in? Radar? How accurate is it? What are the specific indicators for testing? A paper published in Archives of Sexual Behavior by riegel and others from Cornell University's School of Human Ecology thinks that? Gay radar? Relatively accurate, the judgment of sexual orientation is related to typical gender roles.

What kind of clues are the most important?

In riegel et al.' s paper, the first part of the study investigated? Gay radar? At the same time, it also examines whether the radar of homosexuals is more accurate or heterosexual. In order to accomplish this task, the researchers provided the subjects (covering all sexual orientations) with information about the target population and asked them to identify their sexual orientation.

The information provided comes from videos of homosexuals and non-homosexuals talking about their interests. Using video editing software, researchers extracted several independent types of information, so that we can analyze which types of information will be beneficial to people. Testing? Have a greater impact.

The researcher provided the subjects with one of the following four kinds of information about the target: (1) high-contrast silent black-and-white video, which emphasized human movements and postures; (2) Only audio shows the person's speech mode and tone; (3) The photo of this person presents the overall appearance image; (4) printed words about this person's interest.

Overall, the subjects performed well. 75% of homosexuals and 87% of heterosexuals are accurate? Testing? If the subjects just guess at random, the overall accuracy rate should be around 50%. So, this result obviously means that people can really guess to some extent? Testing? Show other people's sexual orientation, not just make wild guesses. In addition, there is no obvious difference between subjects of different sexes and sexual orientations, which means that this detection ability is not the specialty of a certain kind of people. In terms of the influence of different types of information, the results show that appearance and language are the most important.

Then the researchers conducted a second study, investigation? Gay radar? To what extent is it related to typical/atypical gender characteristics. The data and process used in study 2 are exactly the same as that in study 1, but the only difference is that study 2 requires the subjects to evaluate the degree of men or women according to the information about the target population. The evaluation results are related to the judgment of sexual orientation in the study 1.

Combining all kinds of information (actions, words, appearance), people who are considered to be the least typical of gender characteristics are most likely to be classified as homosexuals, while those who are the most typical of gender characteristics are most likely to be considered as heterosexuals. That is to say, in study 2, the most masculine men and the most feminine women are basically considered as straight men in study 1; On the contrary, more feminine men and more masculine women are more likely to be considered gay. This means that when people try to identify their sexual orientation, they may pay attention to whether this person meets the typical gender characteristics.

Small problems in research

Of course, the limitations of this study can not be ignored. For example, all the people in the video gathered in Chicago, a free city with active homosexuals and no secrets. Therefore, homosexuality in the video may not represent other regions. At the same time, all the subjects are from Chicago, and they may be more familiar with non-heterosexuals, so? Testing? High accuracy. Moreover, the subjects had only two choices (one was heterosexual; B homosexuality), but in reality there are more than two sexual orientations (what about bisexuality? )。 If all the possibilities are shown to the subjects, what are they? Detector? Maybe not so accurate.

However, these studies reveal? Gay radar? It does exist. Although the radar is not perfect, it is quite accurate. There are many other information that can also reveal a person's sexual orientation. Although these results show that one of the functions of gender role characteristics (that is, gay men have some female characteristics and lesbians have some male characteristics) may be to help people judge the sexual orientation of others, it should be noted that although most of the detected target population seems to conform to typical gender characteristics, this is not universally applicable. Some gay men are very masculine, and some straight men are very sissy; Similarly, some lesbians are quite feminine, and some straight women are like men. Because of this? Gay radar? The accuracy is not 100%. So, if you are smart, don't make some important decisions based on typical characteristics.
