Characteristics of Clothing in the Enlightenment Period
During the Enlightenment, French women's costumes were varied and colorful. During this period, great changes have taken place in politics, economy, ideological emancipation and cultural integration in France. The spread of the concept of freedom and equality in the Enlightenment has aroused widespread concern about the status and destiny of women. In addition, influenced by the enlightenment, French women's clothing in this period showed more individuality, diversity and vitality than in the past, which was closely related to women's life and status. Starting with the French women's clothing in the Enlightenment, this paper discusses the complicated female images in this period and reveals the changes of French women's social status. As a symbolic language, clothing can concretize abstract ideas and help to promote the change of social and political order. Under the influence of the Enlightenment, the traditional French social order was impacted and the relationship between men and women changed.
