In 1960s, he participated in and led the design, construction and operation of the self-built shielded experimental reactor in China. Since the mid-1970s, he has presided over the research and development of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, and put forward a new concept of modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, which has been patented by Germany, the United States and Japan. He presided over the research and development of the key project of 863 high-tech plan 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, and initially established the research base of high-temperature reactor in China. In 1980s, it initiated a new field of nuclear heating research in China, and presided over the research, design, construction and operation of the world's first 5 trillion shell-and-core heating reactor. He also led the research on cogeneration, air conditioning and refrigeration and seawater desalination using nuclear heating reactors.
