On the Teaching of Industrial Design English

Through the analysis and research of English teaching for industrial design majors, this paper discusses the present situation and possible problems of English teaching for industrial design majors, puts forward some ideas and methods of English teaching for industrial design majors, discusses the teaching problems in application, discusses the measures of curriculum reform from the aspects of teaching content, teaching methods, teaching staff construction and assessment methods, and draws some preliminary conclusions.

I. Introduction

With the rise of the Belt and Road Initiative, the whole international economy has entered a new stage. The increasing import and export of China and the large demand for consulting relevant scientific research documents are particularly important for offering specialized English teaching. With the deepening of professional internationalization and market internationalization, professional English education has been paid more and more attention in undergraduate teaching. It is difficult to teach English for industrial design majors, and the foreign language materials involved have a certain depth and breadth, which brings certain difficulties to the teaching of professional English, especially the understanding and mastery of professional English vocabulary. The traditional teaching methods can't effectively meet the requirements and objectives of current professional English teaching. Therefore, exploring the teaching of industrial design and improving the teaching quality is a hot topic in the current research and discussion of professional English teaching.

Second, the teaching background and analysis of industrial design English

Specialized English is a concept put forward relative to basic English (or general English). Its teaching objectives, teaching contents and practical requirements not only pay attention to grammar and sentence analysis, but also pay attention to the combination of language use and language communication, which not only pays attention to the requirements of society, market and international for English talents, but also pays attention to the needs of students' practical work in the future [2]. The importance and necessity of industrial design English in the process of undergraduate education are mainly reflected in the following aspects. 1. With the development of industrial design majors and disciplines in China, the introduction, quotation and reference of foreign materials, technologies, teaching methods and teaching contents are increasing and becoming increasingly obvious. Bilingual teaching has become the norm. In teaching, English specialized books and foreign original English textbooks, monographs and materials have been widely used as teaching or reference materials. 2. After entering the society, industrial design graduates are increasingly exposed to English professional documents and materials in technical work such as project design, product conception and work management, and are also inspired by foreign design concepts, design ideas, design concepts and related documents in design and conception. Based on the above reality, graduates majoring in industrial design are required to have high professional knowledge and English level. 3. Many undergraduates continue to study for master's degree or doctor's degree after graduation, and their research work is at the forefront of their major. In the process of submitting articles to international journals and conducting international exchanges, you need to have certain foreign language reading and learning abilities, and be able to accurately analyze and master the contents of professional English. Therefore, design students should not only master basic English, but also master certain professional English.

Third, the analysis of the current situation of industrial design English teaching.

1. At present, professional English teaching in science and engineering colleges in China is still in the stage of exploration and research. In the past, colleges and universities focused on basic English teaching, emphasizing the improvement of the passing rate of CET-4 and CET-6 as an important assessment index, while taking specialized English as a simple "extension" of basic English, focusing on the research, discussion and analysis of basic English teaching mode, ignoring the effectiveness of specialized English teaching. 2. At present, in the teaching process of industrial design English in China, schools, teachers and students need to pay more attention to professional English, improve their understanding of professional English, and further improve their learning methods, means and concepts. For example, take the method of large class teaching; The demand for curriculum design, curriculum development and curriculum implementation needs to be improved. There are many problems worth discussing in the rationality of English teaching for industrial design majors, the standardization of teaching materials and the improvement of teachers. However, adopting the basic English teaching method to teach professional English may be the most prominent teaching problem at present. 3. Students have already entered specialized courses when they attend specialized English classes. There are many courses and great pressure, which easily leads students to regard specialized English as a burden; In addition, due to the single content, strong professional background, boring article form and style, difficult expression of vocabulary, sentences and Chinese, students feel great pressure and struggle to learn, which is not conducive to cultivating students' interest and enthusiasm in learning. 4. Teacher-centered teaching. Teachers lead students from learning new words to explaining grammatical difficulties and then translating key sentences. Put students in the position of passive learning, there are few opportunities and atmosphere for students to participate in classroom discussions and exchanges, and there are few interactions and exchanges between teachers and students. Generally speaking, teaching focuses on the interpretation of professional vocabulary and the training of text reading and English translation, while ignoring the training of listening and expressing professional concepts in English. The training of "listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating" is not balanced, and students' poor oral English, irregular pronunciation and poor listening are common. 5. At present, the examination forms of professional English are mostly professional literature translation, and some of them use reference materials and dictionaries for open-book examination. This examination method is not only simple in form and content, but also narrow in content coverage, which also leads to students' easy contempt for professional English learning. On the other hand, the assessment methods of basic English, such as listening, writing, reading and even speaking in CET-4 and CET-6, are worthy of further reform. 6. Teacher status. Few English teachers majoring in industrial design come from teachers with good professional knowledge and English level, and most of them belong to teachers who teach basic English. Although basic English teaching is the foundation of professional English teaching, compared with professional English teachers, basic English teachers have a solid English foundation, which is beneficial to the basic part of professional English teaching. The professional words and expressions of industrial design and their meanings in professional fields need to be supported by good professional basic knowledge. Therefore, teachers with professional knowledge background and basic English teaching ability are ideal teachers of industrial design English [3].

Fourth, the measures and methods of teaching reform of industrial design English

1. In the teaching of industrial design English, while improving the interest and effectiveness of the class through vocabulary memorization, phrase practice and English dialogue, it is necessary to achieve effective teaching objectives through some new teaching concepts, teaching methods, English professional textbooks and multimedia teaching methods. 2. Improve teaching methods by adopting micro-lesson teaching mode. In the teaching class, we adopt detailed steps such as micro-course planning, design, development and implementation. Focusing on "micro-courses", we pay attention to and guide students to learn professional English flexibly from the curriculum arrangement and the whole, and promote the interest, quality, logic, professionalism and reality of industrial design professional English teaching [4]. 3. Study the classroom mode and application of industrial design English, improve students' learning style, urge students to develop good self-study habits and improve teaching quality. In order to meet the needs of modern information-based teaching, combined with the current large-scale classroom teaching methods, new teaching modes such as multimedia, micro-class and flipping classroom are adopted. 4. It is difficult to teach English for industrial design, and the professional knowledge is complicated. In English classroom teaching practice, students are encouraged to change passive learning into active learning through mobile Internet, change their way of thinking and improve their learning ability and quality. 5. In the process of improving teaching methods and means, combined with the actual situation, strengthen the training and communication of students and deepen their deeper understanding of the course content. For example, go to a foreign company or an enterprise with an international background for field trips, visits and internships. Through this step-by-step practical teaching, we can improve and correct students' thinking of not paying attention to professional English learning, make them realize the importance of professional English learning and stimulate their learning motivation. 6. Use quantitative evaluation to evaluate the learning effect and improve the quality of teaching and learning. According to the specific engineering application problems, related practice and professional requirements, the teaching system is evaluated, the teaching content is updated, the teaching methods are improved, and the teaching quality is improved. Research on the examination items and contents of English teaching mode for industrial design majors. 7. Improve teachers' professional knowledge and skills. Selecting, cultivating and improving professional English teachers purposefully, planned and selectively can not only improve the quality and level of basic English teachers, but also strengthen the training and learning of teachers with basic English professional knowledge background. 8. Scientific evaluation system. Curriculum learning evaluation is an important means to check the teaching effect and urge students to learn. Its purpose is to improve the teaching level and quality of specialized English, so it is necessary to formulate an effective and reasonable curriculum assessment system. The assessment of professional English should take the comprehensive ability of professional English, translation, words and English technical terms as the main assessment content, and adopt the "four in one" assessment method, which combines the usual examination with the mid-term examination, the closed book with the open book, the usual grades with the final examination, and the basic knowledge with the professional application knowledge.
