We choose one of the recently frequently tested event topics as an example:
Describe a family celebration (such as a wedding) you attended recently.
You should say
When and where will the celebration be held?
What did you do at this celebration?
Who's there?
Explain why this celebration is held.
First of all, the first problem that candidates need to face after getting the exam questions is the choice of materials. Many students have some doubts in this process. For example, many students often get questions in class and have no ideas, so they will use their recent absence from any family activities as an excuse. In fact, IELTS candidates are mainly middle school students and college students. Their life is mainly learning, and they really lack life experience in their daily life. However, this cannot be an excuse to prevent students from answering questions. In this case, we can use some techniques to choose materials.
First of all, you can choose to start with an example of the topic.
Why do you want to start with an example of the topic? Because since it is an official example, candidates will certainly not digress in the process of using it. In addition, directly using the examples in the original question can save candidates' preparation time, which means that candidates should not spend too much time brainstorming. Therefore, generally speaking, for students with narrow thinking, in the case that their brains are "short-circuited" and they can't think of suitable materials, candidates can directly choose the examples directly given in the questions.
Second, when answering questions, candidates should broaden their thinking and not be bound by examination questions.
Candidates who are familiar with the topic of IELTS speaking will surely find that some qualifiers often appear in the examination questions. For example, the qualifier "You recently participated" appears in the above example. Candidates should never be confused by such qualifiers when answering questions, thinking that they can only say "recently". You can modify your familiar materials to meet the requirements of the limited part of the topic. Because after all, the examiner is not familiar with you during the oral exam, so don't worry that the examiner knows that you are "faking". Then according to the above two points, we can talk about the recent wedding.
Third, determine the direction of answering questions and organize vocabulary materials.
After solving the problem of material selection, the following candidates have to think about related vocabulary. Since it comes to the recent wedding, candidates need to remember the relevant vocabulary about the wedding. When making vocabulary supplements, candidates are advised to ask themselves four W W's: when, where, who and what. Because in the event question, these four W's are the basic elements and must be answered and solved.
When: For this element, it is very easy. As long as the candidate meets the requirements of "recent", then you can choose a month ago or last week and so on.
Venue: The wedding venue is usually a church or hotel. Candidates here should pay attention: no one will get married in a restaurant, so please pay attention to the difference between a hotel and a restaurant.
Who: Candidates must know the expressions of the characters in the following weddings: the bride and groom, the bride, the best man, the bridesmaid, the guests and flower girl.
What: You can choose the vocabulary of the main scene in the wedding to express it, and you don't need to cover everything. After all, the exam time is limited. For example:
Exchange wedding vows exchange wedding vows
Exchange wedding rings exchange wedding rings
Announce the couple as husband and wife
Throw bouquets and flowers.
Fourth, find "self-existence"
Candidates need to find "self-existence" after determining the above three steps when describing and practicing the topic of event questions. After all, this is something I have experienced. So how to find the position of "self-existence"? It's very simple. Start with the part of the 4W element just mentioned, and bring yourself in. For example, the "self-existence" suitable for candidates includes the best man, bridesmaid, guests and so on. Among them, when girls are looking for their own position, they can even put themselves in the position where they receive the bride's bouquet. "You know, I am the one who receives the bouquet." Because this is very in line with the culture of English-speaking countries, it can shorten the distance between myself and the examiner when expressing, "and this is also the reason why this wedding makes me so unforgettable." It is important to remember "self-existence".
Fifth, pay attention to the tense problem.
Of course, candidates also need to pay attention to the past tense, which is one of the mistakes that China candidates often make in the oral exam. Then candidates should pay special attention to the sensitivity and practicality of the past tense when preparing oral questions, and pay more attention not to affect the score because of grammatical errors in the examination room.
