Hanging coffin burial is an ancient burial style in China. That is, after death, relatives bury the body in the coffin, and the wooden coffin is hung on the wooden stake inserted into the cliff, or placed in the cliff hole, cliff seam, or semi-suspended outside the cliff. It is often steep and risky, and there is a deep stream next to it, and there is no way to climb. Its custom is popular in southern minority areas, and the higher it is hung, the more it shows respect for the dead. Hanging coffins are arranged according to the coffin type: wooden stakes, cliff holes (including natural rock cracks), horizontal holes, square holes, cliff piles, cliff edges and so on. The fundamental reason why hanging coffins give people a mysterious and magical feeling and become the so-called "eternal mystery" lies in: how did hanging coffins "hang up"? Relying on mountains and rivers is the basic principle for the ancients to choose habitats; Trees, kudzu vine and bamboo are all available materials for hanging coffins. Climbing to the precipice, the ancients selected the location where the coffin was stored. After piling or chiseling the hole where the coffin was placed, the coffin parts were hung on the precipice with rattan or rope for assembly, and then the body was hung and put in, and the coffin was covered to complete the coffin burial. As to whether hanging coffins and corpses on cliffs separately conforms to the idea of hanging coffins, this question was confirmed in the funeral activities of Miao people in the early years of Getudai. Although they no longer hang coffins, the remains were carried to the cemetery by their sons during burial and put into coffins.
