The College of Earth Sciences has a glorious history of nearly a hundred years. Its predecessor was the Department of Geology of Chongqing University, which was founded in 1929. It is one of the oldest backbone colleges in the school. The late famous geologists, Bi, Li Chengsan, Chang Longqing, Liu Zuyi, Wu, Zhou Xiaohe, Hu, Zhang, Bian, etc. They are all academic leaders in the founding period of the department.

Geographic information system (science)

● Training objectives: This major trains talents who have the basic theories, knowledge and skills of geographic information system, cartography and remote sensing technology, can engage in scientific research or teaching in scientific research institutions or universities, and engage in geographical work in government departments, financial institutions, companies, universities and planning and design institutes in the fields of land resources, cities, resources, environment, transportation, population, housing, land, disasters, infrastructure and planning management.

● Main courses: introduction to geographic information science, comprehensive geography, GIS principle and application, GIS spatial analysis, map and cartography, computer cartography, introduction to remote sensing technology, remote sensing digital image processing, data structure, database principle, visual programming method, surveying, GPS principle and application, general geology, mineral and rock deposit science foundation, structural geology foundation, remote sensing geology, GIS engineering design, integration and application of 3S technology, etc.

● Employment orientation: After graduation, students can engage in scientific research or teaching in scientific research institutions or high and secondary schools, and can also engage in applied research, technology development, production management and administrative management related to geographic information systems in government departments, financial institutions, companies, universities, planning and design institutes and other units in the fields of cities, regions, resources, environment, transportation, population, housing, disasters, infrastructure, planning and management.

● Further study direction: After graduation, students can continue to study for master's degrees in geography, geology, geological resources and geological engineering, surveying and mapping science and technology, computer science and technology, etc.

This major has the right to award master's and doctor's degrees in cartography and geographic information system, cartography and geographic information engineering, photogrammetry and remote sensing, earth exploration and information technology, the key laboratory of land and resources information technology and application of the Ministry of Land and Resources (ministerial level) and the professional laboratory of 3S technology and surveying and mapping engineering (school level).

This major lasts for four years and is awarded with a Bachelor of Science degree.
