Ding Zhaozhong 1936 1 was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and returned to China with his parents three months later. Born in Rizhao, Shandong (Ding Zhaozhong's father was born in Rizhao, and his mother was born in Haiyang, Yantai).

Ding Zhaozhong studied in China in his early years. His father graduated from National Qingdao University (China Ocean University) and once taught at Qingdao Shandong University.

Ding Zhaozhong went to Taiwan Province province with his father in 1949, and went to the United States in 1956.
