Huang Gang recalled that the filming of Water Margin by Shandong TV Station in the early 1980s opened the door for China TV art to go to the public, and he became attached to this classic, thanks to Mou Xia, a fellow Qingdao native who also studied at Shandong Art Institute. Mou Xia played Pan Jinlian in Zhu Yanping's Song Wu, and she recommended Huang Gang to play Gao Yanei in Lin Chong. In the online Water Margin, Mou Xia's version of Pan Jinlian's image was evaluated as a "beautiful and generous performance" by netizens, surpassing the CCTV version of Wang Siyi and the new version of Gan Ting Ting.

Of course, as a fellow of Qingdao Port, Huanggang did not live up to Mou Xia's recommendation, and he was very dedicated in filming Gao Yanei's plays. "I remember that we were filming in Weifang, filming the scene where Gao Yanei flirted with Lin Niangzi. I insisted on jumping out of the upstairs window and broke my leg, so everyone could only watch my close-up on TV later."

But interestingly, Huang Gang plays Gao Yanei and Zhong Qianlei plays Gao Qiu, but the "father and son" never met each other on the set, because Huang Gang filmed Lin Chong and Zhong Qianlei filmed Song Wu.
