East China University of Science and Technology has regarded table tennis as a key teaching project since its establishment. By 1985, East China University of Science and Technology has become famous in mass table tennis competitions and inter-school competitions in Shanghai. During the period of 1988, the school clearly positioned table tennis as a high-level development and began to explore the school-running mode of cultivating high-level outstanding athletes in ordinary colleges and universities.

1990, the China University Sports Association established five branches, and the Chinese University Table Tennis Association was born, with its meeting place in East China University of Science and Technology. Starting from 1992, the Table Tennis Association teamed up for the first time to participate in the 9th World University Table Tennis Championships held in Lyon, France. Shanghai Jiaotong University sent a men's team and Donghua Institute of Technology sent a women's team. These two schools are universities closely related to table tennis, and they are also comrades-in-arms who fought side by side and complemented each other from the beginning. The World University Table Tennis Championships are held every two years. From 1992 to 200 1, the team of East China University of Science and Technology has achieved good results. In its heyday, it won six championships in seven events. It was the 13 rd World University Table Tennis Championships, and nearly 300 athletes took part in the championship held in East China University of Science and Technology. This is the first time that China University Sports Association has independently held the World University Individual Championship.

200 1 Beijing, table tennis entered the World University Games for the first time, and the organizing committee approved table tennis to form an independent team. East China University of Science and Technology joined the national team to form a team of Niu Jianfeng, Zhang Yining and Tieyana. After winning the team championship, Tieyana won the singles championship, which made East China University of Science and Technology famous.
