Southeast University began with Sanjiang Normal School, which was founded in 1902. After that, it experienced important historical periods such as Liangjiang Normal University, Nanjing Normal University, National Southeast University and National Central University. During the period of 1952, the departments of colleges and universities in China were adjusted and the departments of arts and sciences moved out. The former National Central University School of Engineering was merged into Fudan University, Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University and Jinling University, and Nanjing Institute of Technology was established in the original site of the National Central University (now Sipailou Campus of Southeast University). 1988 was renamed Southeast University. 20 17 Southeast University initiated the establishment of "Sino-British University Engineering Education and Research Alliance", which is the first university alliance between China and Britain featuring engineering education and research. Nine British universities including Queen's University of Belfast, Birmingham University, Cambridge University, Cardiff University, Leeds University, Liverpool University, University College London, Nottingham University and Warwick University joined the alliance.
The school also cooperated with Monash University in Australia to establish Southeast University-Monash University Suzhou Joint Graduate School, which is the first Sino-foreign joint graduate school approved by the Ministry of Education.
