In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was formed by the merger of Jianghan Petroleum College, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College and Hubei Medical College of Health Workers.
Jianghan Petroleum Institute, formerly known as Beijing Institute of Petroleum Technology founded by 1950, began to hold general undergraduate education at 1978, which belongs to China Oil and Gas Group. Since 2000, it has been established by the central and local governments and placed under the management of Hubei Province. Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Teachers College and Hubei Medical College of Health Workers were founded in 1977, 1936 and195/year respectively.

The Historical Evolution of Yangtze University
From 65438 to 0950, Beijing Institute of Petroleum Technology was founded, which was the first petroleum school founded after the founding of New China. The original campus was in dingfuzhuang, Beijing (now the campus of Beijing Broadcasting Institute).
1954, the school was renamed Beijing Petroleum Geology School.
1965, the school moved to Daqing and changed its name to Daqing Petroleum Geology School.
1972, the school moved to Jingzhou and changed its name to Jianghan Petroleum Geology School.
1978, approved by the State Council, the school was renamed Jianghan Petroleum Institute.
Since 2000, the school has been jointly established by the central and local governments and handed over to Hubei Province for management.
On April 6, 2003, approved by the Ministry of Education, Jianghan Petroleum College, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College and Hubei Medical College of Health Workers merged to form Yangtze University.
