Mario capecchi1937 was born in Verona, a northern Italian city. 196 1 obtained a bachelor's degree in chemistry and physics from Antioch College, Ohio, USA. 1967, under the guidance of james watson (1962, one of the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine), mario capecchi received his doctorate in biophysics from Harvard University. From 1967 to 1969, Capecci was a junior researcher of Harvard University Researchers Association. 1969, Capecci became an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry of Harvard Medical School, and was promoted to associate professor in 197 1 year. 1973, Capecci entered the University of Utah to teach. Since 1988, Capecci has also been a researcher at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and he is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Capecci, an effective researcher at Harvard University, discovered the molecular mechanism that led to the synthesis of protein. When he established his laboratory in the University of Utah on 1973, he tried to introduce molecular genetics into the study of animal cells in order to understand how to control genes in these cells. Capecci started a series of laboratory studies in 1977, demonstrating the technology of gene targeting in animal cells, and successfully targeted a mouse in 1989.
Capecci was elected as an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States on 199 1 and became an academician of the European Academy of Sciences in 2002. He also won many honors and awards.
The Scientific Committee of the Royal Swedish Academy announced that the 2007 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine will be awarded to American scientists mario capecchi and oliver smith and British scientist Martin Evans for their contributions to stem cell research.
