University of Shanghai for Science and Technology originated from Hujiang University founded by 1906 and German Medical College founded by 1907.

In the early 1950s, Hujiangyuan University merged with the former Shanghai Higher Vocational School of Mechanics (the former site of German Medical Engineering School) to become Shanghai Institute of Machinery (later renamed East China University of Science and Technology 1994) and Shanghai Institute of Machinery.
