How to evaluate The Songs of the South?
Chuci was originally a poetic form that rose during the Warring States Period. By the early Western Han Dynasty, it had become a general term for the works of Qu Yuan, Song Yu and others. Songs of the South is the best poem since The Book of Songs came out, which marks the emergence of writers' literature. The Book of Songs and Songs of the South are both called the two sources of China's classical poetry, but they are qualitatively different. We can see the romantic features that the Book of Songs does not have.

Affectionate and delicate feelings and the feelings in the ubiquitous "I" and "The Book of Songs" are mostly elegant and peaceful, but in "Songs of the South", the feelings become hot, intense, high-spirited or lingering, delicate and deep. At the same time, due to the "I" in the poem, strong self-awareness and personality, the life of the poem is full of inner quality and charm, pointing directly to our hearts and bringing us touch, tears, joy and melancholy. Qu Yuan's pen turns iron into gold and decay into magic. He brought in fairy tales, fables and myths full of primitive meanings, and he brought in the rude words and witchcraft of Chu people, which turned into mysterious atmosphere, romantic artistic conception, elegant charm, gorgeous colors and crazy passion. He also attracted the repulsion between heaven and earth. He used orchids, herbs and lotus clothes to symbolize the purity and nobility of his character. He compared a group of little party member to smelly grass, dirty birds and filth in Xiao Ai. All these characteristics are often called romanticism by experts.
