Lesson one

Small friction with the law

I've only had trouble with the police once in my life. The whole process from being arrested to appearing in court was a very unpleasant thing at that time, but now it has become a much-told story. What annoyed me about this experience was the arbitrary situation surrounding my arrest and subsequent court trial.

It happened about 12 years ago, in February. I graduated from middle school a few months ago, but I can't go to college until June 10. I still live at home.

One morning, I came to Richmond, a suburb of London, not far from where I live. I want to find a temporary job and save some money to travel. As the weather was fine and there was nothing urgent, I took a leisurely look out of the window and visited the park. Sometimes Cui Qian stops to look around. Now it seems that I must have been ruined by this obvious wandering without return.

It happened at 1 1: 30. I couldn't find a job in the local library. I just came out and saw a man crossing the street, apparently coming to talk to me. I thought he was going to ask me the time, but he said he was a policeman and wanted to arrest me. At first, I thought it was a joke, but another policeman appeared in front of me, this time wearing a police uniform, which convinced me.

"Why did you arrest me?" I asked.

"Wandering around, trying to commit crimes," he said.

"What case?" I asked again.

"Stealing," he said.

"Steal what?" I asked.

"Bottle," he said deadpan.

"Oh," I said.

It turns out that there are many small pickpockets in this area, especially stealing milk bottles on the front steps.

Then, I made a big mistake. At that time, I was 19, with unkempt long hair, and I thought I was a member of the "youth counterculture" in the 1960s. So I want to pretend to be indifferent and indifferent to this matter. So I tried to say in a casual and extremely casual tone, "How long have you been following me?" In this way, in their eyes, I seem to know this kind of thing, which also makes them more convinced that I am a complete villain.

A few minutes later, a police car came.

"Sit in the back," they said. "Put your hands on the back of the front seat and don't move."

They sat on both sides of me. This is no longer a joke.

At the police station, they questioned me for hours. I continue to pretend to be worldly and get used to such things. When they asked me what I was doing, I told them I was looking for a job. "Ah," I can imagine them thinking, "what an unemployed guy."

Finally, I was formally charged and told that I would be tried in Richmond District Court next Monday. Then they told me to leave.

I wanted to defend myself in court, but when my father learned about it, he immediately hired a clever lawyer. When we appeared in court on Monday, we brought all kinds of witnesses, including my middle school English teacher, as witnesses of my character. But as a result, the court did not ask him to testify. My experiment didn't go that far. 1.5 minutes later, the judge dismissed the charges against me. I have nothing.

Hope to adopt!
