Guide to studying in Germany

Why Germany?

Awards and grants

Generally speaking, German universities do not offer any scholarships. So it doesn't make much sense to apply for scholarships from German universities.

But there are many institutions in Germany that award scholarships to non-German students.

In Germany, DAAD Auschwitz College is the largest institution in charge of scholarship affairs. However, generally speaking, only senior college students have the opportunity to get a DAAD scholarship. Moreover, depending on students' majors or nationalities, some scholarships are only for those who have obtained master's degrees.

Other scholarship institutions have different principles for awarding scholarships. Basically, the principle is based on excellent grades.

General situation of German universities

Higher education in Germany is very popular. 16 There are more than 300 institutions of higher learning in the federal states, and the total number of registered students is about 1.9 million. Among them, comprehensive universities 1 14 (including universities of science and engineering, normal universities and ordinary universities, etc.). ) has about1300,000 students; Applied Science University 152, with about 400,000 students. There are 49 art and music colleges with more than 30,000 students. There are dozens of state administrative colleges with nearly 40,000 students. At present, the total number of foreign students studying in Germany is about 6.5438+0.4 million. The annual enrollment is about 220,000. Universities have more than 400 majors.

Most universities in Germany are located in cities with good humanistic environment and beautiful natural environment. Excellent teaching, research and living facilities provide an objective material guarantee for completing university studies.

German policy towards foreign students.

In order to meet the needs of foreign economic, trade, cultural and academic exchanges, the German government has been making some necessary adjustments to its foreign cultural policy in recent years, especially its policy on foreign students, and has taken various measures to attract outstanding foreign youth to study in Germany, so as to facilitate foreign students and young scholars to study for degrees and conduct academic research. In recent years, the proportion of foreign students in German universities has gradually increased, and it is planned to reach 65,438+00% of the total number of students, about 280,000.

To this end, many universities in Germany have made some adjustments and improvements to the syllabus and curriculum, and some majors have set up international courses taught in English or in both English and German. Besides, there are new ways to get a degree. Now, you can study for a diploma directly in the traditional way, or you can study for a bachelor's degree newly established in some colleges and universities and then a master's degree in accordance with the reform method. After obtaining a "master's" degree, you can continue to study for a "doctor's" degree.

At present, there are more than 20,000 China students registered in German universities. In addition, thousands of scientists and scholars are engaged in scientific research and academic exchanges in German universities and research institutions. From 65438 to 0999, China issued 3943 university study visas. In 2000, it reached 765 1 person-time.

Necessary materials for studying abroad

What should I do first when applying for university entrance?

You should determine your major first. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to obtain detailed and reliable information in advance. Applicants can write to the foreign affairs offices of several universities with this major or obtain relevant introduction materials and application forms for applying for this major by e-mail. Contact information should be accompanied by a German or English resume (Kurzer Lebenslauf); If possible, it is best to attach a copy of the materials that can prove your academic achievements or academic qualifications.

This work should generally be carried out one year in advance or at least half a year in order to have enough time to make the necessary preparations.

General steps of applying for a university.

Generally can be divided into three steps:

1. Write a letter (in German or English) to the foreign affairs office of the university you want to apply for according to the address, briefly introduce yourself, including your name, gender, date of birth and education (major and degree you have studied), explain the major you want to apply for and the semester of admission (Wintersemester or Sommersemester), and ask for relevant materials and application forms.

2. Prepare various application materials according to the requirements of German university defense.

3. Send all the application materials at once, without omission, including the completed application form, language certificate or certificate and materials that must be notarized.

Apply to the University of Applied Sciences (FH)

1. Write to the school you apply for six months or one year in advance, with the following contents: a brief introduction (including academic qualifications); Ask for professional introduction, application instructions and the "Application Form for Admission" made by the school; Understand the exchange office of "Admission Qualification Audit Office".

2. After receiving the reply, send me various academic certificates (including language certificates, internship certificates, etc.). ) Go to the Admission Qualification Examination Office of Honshu University of Applied Sciences.

3. After receiving a positive reply, that is, after obtaining the "Fachhocchul-Zugangsbrechtigong" certificate, send all the materials (including: admission qualification certificate, filled-in application form, diploma notarized certificate, internship certificate and language certificate) to the school (only in this state) for formal application.

In this process, all the work should be arranged in a planned way to be orderly. In particular, we should pay attention to the special professional requirements put forward in the school letter so as to make early preparations.

Do I have to have an internship certificate to apply for FH?

To apply for engineering, design and other majors, you need to submit a valid internship certificate. This must be clearly understood from the school as soon as possible, and preparations and arrangements will be made in time, otherwise it will be caught off guard. If you haven't done professional practice, you might as well write to several FH to consult and see if some schools can let you make up for it in Germany after you get to school.

Apply for art design major.

Art majors have some special requirements for applicants, so you must write to the relevant universities in advance (preferably one year in advance) to ask for background materials about the major, and then send my works and other materials in time as required to avoid delaying the application because of inaccurate information.

Once you pass Vorauswahl and receive the "examination notice" from the school, you should apply for a valid visa to go to Germany to take the "professional ability examination" immediately. Pass the exam, get the "Professional Admission Qualification" and formally enter the school with a qualified language certificate.

What majors must I take to apply for "Eignungspruefung"?

Applicants for arts (such as painting, sculpture, etc.). ), design (such as graphic design, industrial design, etc. ), music (such as vocal music, instrumental music, composition, musical instrument making, etc. ) and physical education class must take the "professional ability test".

Are there any exceptions for applicants majoring in music, art and design in terms of admission requirements and German proficiency requirements?

The basic requirements are the same as other majors. However, music, art and design classes submit a certain number of works (exercises) to participate in the pre-selection according to different specific professional needs. German proficiency requirements are basically the same as those of other majors, and can be relaxed in some cases.

If the applicants majoring in music, art and design have special talents, German art colleges and FH design majors can make an exception if they have insufficient academic qualifications, but they must pass the "Begabtenpruefung".

"quota restriction" major

Some "hot" majors have limited study places due to too many applicants, while federal or state universities impose "quota restrictions" on freshmen (Zulassungsbecheraenkungen: Numerus Claus, NC). Among them, a certain percentage of places are allocated exclusively to foreign students. The key to being admitted is the applicant's academic performance (college entrance examination score+university score, conversion); Freshmen may have to take a professional written test and finally choose the best.

Which majors fall within the scope of quota restriction?

In fact, there is no absolute limit, which depends on the situation of federal (hard indicators) and state universities (soft indicators). Generally speaking, the "hot" majors related to international students are: medicine, pharmacy, biology (including biochemistry, biotechnology, etc. ), psychology, informatics, architecture, national economics, business economics/management, etc.

When should the application materials be sent to Germany?

The deadline for universities (Uni) to accept applications for admission is generally:

1. Summer term (SS):65438+ 10/5 (school starts in early April).

2. Winter term (WS): July15 (1school starts in early October 10).

The deadline for admission to individual universities may be advanced, especially for international courses, which are not uniform among schools and majors. Please pay attention to the school notice.

Application materials (subject to review by Akademische Pruefstelle/APS of the Audit Department of the Cultural Office of the German Embassy) should generally be sent two or three months before the deadline for acceptance; The materials are incomplete, so it is best not to send them, so as not to delay the application.

Self-expression and Thinking Diffusion —— APS and Studying in Germany

Dr Bunke 165438+ returned to Germany in the middle of 10 after inspecting APS and other matters in China. The excitement brought by his first trip to China was hard to cool for a while. At present, the pass rate of APS exam is less than 60%. The failure rate of more than 40% is not only caused by language barriers, but also the result of thinking differences and cultural differences. To this end, I asked him to give advice to China students facing APS.

Dr. Bunker first wants to correct the misunderstanding of APS in China. He said that APS is not an exam in the traditional sense of China, but an opportunity for students to express themselves. Please talk about why you chose to study in Germany, and talk about your plans after completion, which are all within the scope of APS' questions. For Germans, the purpose of doing things is as indispensable as the process of planning and doing things. But to Dr Bunker's surprise, China students have no plans for their future. The answer to the question "Future plans" is:12 students said "I don't know", and12 students simply replied: "Go back to China to find a job after graduation". As Germany, how much they want to hear the voices of young people in China, the main body of the unprecedented upsurge of studying in Germany that is taking place in China! In just 200 1 year, Germany received more than 5000 application materials from China, more than any other country. These young people in China have devoted their youth, and their parents have also invested a lot of money. For most Germans, studying in China is a family choice. Don't, nothing to look forward to, nothing to plan?

Secondly, China hopes to learn from APS the ability of German students to comprehensively apply knowledge and divergent thinking, rather than simply verifying their memory of a certain professional knowledge. Dr. Bunke and Ms. Otto, the head of APS China, share the same feeling: China students have a good grasp of their professional knowledge, but they have neglected to cultivate their ability to use knowledge flexibly, especially how to learn from the strengths of various disciplines to solve a professional problem.

When Dr Bunker was in China, he asked his students: What would you do if you were given one million dollars? The answer disappointed him: some said, buy a house; Some people say, buy IT stocks. No one has made a comprehensive budget for that "million dollars", let alone a macro consideration. Young people's thinking should be the least narrow, the most divergent and the most networked.

Thirdly, Dr. Bunker thinks that Arabs are good at oral communication, while East Asians are good at written communication. In his view, for young students in China, two years is not enough to adapt to the transition from the teaching system in China to the German teaching system. This is at least twice that of other international students. According to him, in his German university, 35%-40% of China students were eliminated by the university after passing the DSH and Voldemort exams. This elimination rate is higher than other international students. The difference is that in the final degree exam, the passing rate of China students is much higher than that of some other foreign students. For example, some students in West Africa and Arab countries have strong language ability and adaptability to the new environment. A large number of them passed the DSH and Voldiplum exams. However, the passing rate of their degree examination is very low. Many German professors have discovered this problem and hope that sociologists will study this phenomenon. At present, Germans trust the master's education in China. Therefore, German professors are more willing to accept doctoral students from China, especially young doctoral students from China. Germany needs high-level talents from China and responsible people from China. Germany hopes that the composition of China people coming to Germany will be adjusted.

The ability to adapt to Germany also includes social skills, for example, the ability to communicate vertically with civil servants in various offices and the ability to communicate horizontally with people around them. Dr Bunke doubts whether China students notice that they are in the German international environment, and he is even less clear whether China students are interested in taking advantage of this international environment in the process of world globalization. For example, he said that the "environmental adaptation week" method led by old classmates has been implemented for 15 years. Fifteen years passed, and it was not until the next semester that the first old student from China volunteered to be a freshman guide. Most freshmen are from China, but the volunteers are never as big as China. What China students need most when going abroad is guidance. They spend a lot of money to entrust an intermediary to go abroad, which is very "China characteristic". However, social skills cannot be entrusted to "intermediaries" for training. Pointing to more than 30 application materials in the corner of his office, Dr. Bunke said that each one was wrapped in the same envelope, about 3 cm thick-it was sent by an intermediary company in Hubei, and it has not been opened yet.

Speaking of "intermediary", Dr Bunke thinks that young students in China need a suitable guide more than paying 2,000 euros for a document service. In the two years before 2000, among the application materials submitted by China to German universities, false materials accounted for more than 10%, totaling thousands. Some have studied in the university for three years, but they have produced proof of studying for four years; Some say they graduated from a certain major, but that university never offered that major at all, and so on. 90% of the materials handled by an intermediary company in Liaoning are fake materials. This once influenced Germans' impression of China people and harmed the interests of German college students. In fact, the biggest victim is the China students themselves. This will affect their lives. 200 1 introduced APS, this situation has improved.

Finally, Dr Bunke suggested that students in China should pay attention to the accumulation of specialized German vocabulary while learning general German. In APS dialogue, this problem is also very prominent.

Brief introduction of audit department

The Audit Department for Studying in Germany (APS) is a department of the Cultural Office of the German Embassy in China. According to the requirements of German universities and the situation of international students in China, the auditing department examines the qualifications of China applicants (non-China full-time general higher education such as China University, two-year junior college and short-term training is not qualified to apply for German universities) and the authenticity of the materials, and issues corresponding audit certificates after passing the examination. Applicants without audit certificates will not be able to apply for study places in excellent universities in Germany.

If China applicants want to participate in the audit, they need to submit corresponding supporting materials. Among them, China applicants are divided into three categories according to different situations: "applicants who are generally in China, applicants who have already been in Germany, and art and music applicants". The three types of applicants must provide different supporting materials according to their different situations. Please refer to the specific instructions for details.

For ordinary domestic applicants, the audit department will call the applicant himself and arrange an interview with the audit department after reviewing the supporting materials. The interview is divided into two parts: written test and oral test. In the 20-minute written test and oral test, questions will be asked about the major that the applicant has studied in China University, not the major that the applicant intends to study in Germany. The interview language is German or English.

The audit certificate issued by the audit department is valid for 2 years. Applicants who have obtained the audit certificate can apply to enter the simplified visa application procedure in the audit department. This procedure is a visa processing procedure provided by the Audit Department in cooperation with the Visa Office of the German Embassy for German students applying to study in China. According to this procedure, applicants do not have to go to the visa office of the German Embassy for an interview in person. Please refer to Simplified Application Procedures for Studying Abroad for the required visa application materials. Applicants can submit an application for studying abroad visa at the same time when the audit department conducts an interview. However, applicants who fail the final exam cannot enter the simplified visa processing procedure.
