The school has the same roots as Sichuan Normal University. Founded in 1946, the private North Sichuan University of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce has gone through the stages of private North Sichuan University, public North Sichuan University, North Sichuan University, Sichuan Normal University, Nanchong Normal University, Nanchong Normal University and Sichuan Normal University. In April 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed as West China Normal University.
