The Education Department is an entity, which now governs the Education Department, Curriculum and Teaching Department, Education Information Technology Department, Basic Education Reform and Development Institute, Curriculum and Teaching Institute, Vocational Education and Adult Education Institute, Higher Education Institute, Comparative Education Institute, Higher Education Institute, Examination and Evaluation Institute, Shanghai Digital Education Equipment Engineering Technology Research Center, Preschool Education and Special Education College, Open Education College, Shanghai Lifelong Education College, National Education Macro-policy Institute and Middle School Principals Training Center of the Ministry of Education.

After the establishment of the Department of Education, it is planned to establish the Department of Educational Psychology and the School of Educational Management and Leadership. It is planned to set up Shanghai Teachers' Development College on the basis of Open Education College, and set up Teachers' Education College on the basis of Education Professional Degree Management Center.

Pre-school Education and Special Education College, National Education Macro-Policy Research Institute, Middle School Principals Training Center of Ministry of Education, newly established Teachers Education College and Shanghai Teachers Development College are entities. Before the establishment of Shanghai Teachers' College, the Open Education College operated as an entity.
