On June 29th, 2003, on the occasion of the first anniversary of the promulgation of the Law on Popularization of Science, China Association for Science and Technology launched a series of popular science activities nationwide, with a view to setting off a nationwide upsurge in publicizing and implementing the Law on Popularization of Science. Since then, China Association for Science and Technology has organized national societies and local societies to carry out science popularization day activities throughout the country every year.

Since 2005, in order to facilitate the masses and students to better participate in the activities, the date of the activities has been changed from June to the third public holiday in September every year, as the concentrated time of the National Science Popularization Day.
