In the 1950s, Zou presided over the national key project "Study on the Little Earth Tiger". From the perspective of biology and ecology, he made an in-depth study on the biological characteristics and occurrence law of the black cutworm and achieved remarkable results. Finally, he collected and published "Essays of Little Tiger". Many achievements have played an active role in production, and some of them have been made into science and education films for national publicity.
Zou has accumulated rich experience and profound theoretical knowledge in practice, mastered the general law of the occurrence of major agricultural insects in China, and often put forward directional research topics. In the early 1960 s, he proposed in the teaching and research group that we should focus on the research and application of insect population and its quantity, and the insect resistance of crops. After more than 20 years' efforts, the teaching and research group has achieved fruitful results in these two studies, among which the migration law of rice leaf roller and rice brown planthopper has been basically clear, and won the scientific and technological achievement awards of Jiangsu Province, Ministry of Agriculture and national level. Practice has proved that this research direction pointed out by Zou accords with the development trend of entomology at home and abroad.
1980, the first book on insect ecology in China was published. This is the fruit of Zou's decades of insect ecological research. In order to write this monograph well, he kept reading the latest monographs and periodicals at home and abroad, collected a lot of practical materials from all over the country, and fabricated some observation experiments. For example, in order to find out the life history and habits of Nanjing maple silkworm, he kept it in his bedroom. Use the large and small baskets at home as cages, and use the gaps between screen windows and glass windows. At first, maple silkworms didn't mate. After searching for the reasons in many ways, he finally found that the reason why the female silkworm and the male silkworm did not mate was because the light was too strong, so he secretly covered the window, and the maple silkworm mated successfully. Zou enriched these valuable materials into insect ecology. Therefore, this monograph is rich in content and vivid in image, and has been well received by peers after publication.
