Teaching Chinese as a foreign language is a compound major established by Shanghai International Studies University 1985, which was merged into the Institute of International Education in 2000. This major mainly studies bilingual teaching in Chinese and English. Students in this major have a solid foundation in Chinese and English, and have a comprehensive understanding of China culture and the history of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. A considerable number of graduates have made great contributions to teaching Chinese as a foreign language at home and abroad, cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, news media and other related fields. Main courses: Basic English, Advanced English, English-Chinese Translation, General Situation of Britain and America, Ancient Chinese, Modern Chinese, China Literature, Foreign Literature, General Theory of China Culture, Western Culture and Etiquette, Studies of Sinology Abroad, Introduction to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Introduction to Linguistics, Introduction to Foreign Language Education, Cross-cultural Verbal Communication, Second Foreign Language, etc.

Training objectives: After four years of undergraduate study, students of this major should be proficient in using foreign languages for communication, and should reach the level of English majors in listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation (through TEM-8). On the one hand, students should have a solid basic knowledge of Chinese and English, have a comprehensive understanding of Chinese and foreign literature and cultural exchanges, and master the basic theories and methods of teaching Chinese as a foreign language; On the other hand, students should have certain theoretical knowledge of secretarial science, understand and master modern office tools, and have the basic skills needed for foreign-related secretarial work. Teaching Chinese as a foreign language is a compound subject, which mainly aims at cultivating high-level talents for cultural exchanges with foreign countries, professionals engaged in teaching Chinese as a foreign language and high-level talents who can engage in management work in foreign-related departments.

The main employment direction of graduates: schools or foreign companies are engaged in Chinese teaching and training; Cultural departments at home and abroad engage in cultural exchanges; Press and publication institutions are engaged in foreign propaganda work; State organs, foreign trade and economic cooperation systems, foreign-funded enterprises and joint ventures engage in management. Business English is an undergraduate major approved by the Ministry of Education and included in the official enrollment plan in 2009. Through the study of specialized courses, students will have a certain knowledge of economics, and become compound and applied foreign language talents who can master a wide range of basic knowledge and theories of international business, have strong cross-cultural communication skills, and meet the needs of national government agencies, international organizations, multinational companies and other enterprises and institutions engaged in business activities at home and abroad.

The main employment direction of graduates: the national foreign trade and economic cooperation system, foreign-funded enterprises, large state-owned or collective enterprises, joint ventures, Chinese and foreign banks, industrial and commercial banks and other domestic and foreign economic and trade companies and institutions engaged in economic and trade exchanges and management. Curriculum and teaching theory is a new discipline, which belongs to two disciplines of pedagogy. The specialty of curriculum and teaching theory in Shanghai International Studies University is language curriculum and teaching. It systematically and deeply studies the basic theory and practice of language teaching, studies the particularity of language teaching and other courses, especially the comparison with mother tongue teaching, and discusses the best way of language teaching and learning.

This subject is devoted to the research on language courses, teaching materials and teaching, and to the research on the cultivation and development of high-quality language teachers. It not only pays attention to tracking, grasping and studying the development of language education teaching theory, but also pays attention to the discussion of language classroom teaching practice under the guidance of theory, which directly serves the reform and development of language courses in China, and at the same time cultivates senior professionals with broad horizons, extensive professional basic knowledge, innovative spirit and professional thinking, who can independently engage in language courses and teaching research.

At present, there are 3 professors, 3 associate professors and 7 lecturers in this discipline. Professor Zheng Xinmin, doctoral supervisor, Ph.D., University of Hong Kong, executive director of the Teachers' Professional Education and Development Committee of China English Teaching Research Association, has published more than 40 papers in foreign language core journals at home and abroad. Professor Wang Xuemei is a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Education Science of East China Normal University. His main research areas are second language acquisition and applied linguistics. The research results won 7 provincial awards, and published monographs 1 article in domestic core academic journals, with nearly 50 papers. Professor Zhang Xuemei's main research interests are second language acquisition, applied linguistics and corpus linguistics. He is the author of The Construction of a Second Language (2008) and has published more than 20 papers in core journals.

Curriculum and Teaching Theory Postgraduates' courses are divided into three categories: compulsory courses, degree core courses and professional elective courses.

1. Public required courses: politics, English, second foreign language;

2. Core courses of degree: educational principles, educational psychology, teacher development, language acquisition, modern curriculum theory, comparison of Chinese and foreign educational ideas, Chinese and foreign teaching schools, educational testing and evaluation, use and development of teaching materials, and pedagogy research methods;

3. Specialized elective courses: academic paper writing, international education research, computer-aided teaching, research on curriculum reform of basic education, topic selection of contemporary educational papers, and research on school-based teaching and research system.
