What can the number of citations of papers tell us?
China has the second largest number of papers in the world. More than 35% of people who have never been quoted to write their own papers know in their hearts that when we do a topic and write an article, there are only a few or even one or two core documents that are the most critical and inspiring. Most of the cited documents are used to tell stories, support their own views and defend themselves. So when others quote their own articles, there is no need to be complacent, because that can only show that others have read your articles, but it does not mean that others fully agree with your views. Sometimes, others quote your article, but the usage is arrogant and even misunderstand the author's original intention. This situation is also quite common. . But if a research group has more than two articles in one direction, it will not be cited by zero. Because of the follow-up work, I usually quote the last published article. Nowadays, it is a common phenomenon in the field of scientific research that both Daniel and ordinary researchers try to quote their past articles. Therefore, when a research group publishes 20-30 articles in the same direction within a year, and each article in the back quotes its own article, then the first article will be quoted at least 20 or 30 times within a year. Therefore, the number of papers cited today largely reflects the vitality and productivity of a research group in a certain direction. After some articles were published, no one quoted them at first, because the direction of doing it was cold and few people were doing it. But after more than a decade or even decades, with the breakthrough of a certain technology and the maturity of conditions, this direction that no one has ever done suddenly becomes hot. The number of citations of papers that have been neglected will also increase. Therefore, the number of citations can also reflect the research hotspots and trends to some extent. In other words, articles in hot directions are easy to be cited, especially when a certain direction is just emerging. The number of citations can and should reflect the importance of the article. If a researcher can have the above three, that is, have an effective research group to lead a certain research direction and make some important discoveries in this direction, then this person is a great man in this direction. However, in reality, the output and quality (especially the importance) of articles seem to be incompatible. When a research group publishes dozens of articles in one direction every year, it is difficult to guarantee the importance of the articles and it is easy to give people the suspicion of adulteration. In short, the number of citations in today's papers is not entirely a reflection of the importance of the articles, but also a reflection of the vitality of a research group and whether the research direction is hot or not. Therefore, when you are in an obscure small research group, there is no need to worry about the number of citations, because in terms of citations, you may never be as good as the high-yield research group or Daniel's research group (the position of the speaker will always determine the weight of what you say), even though your findings may sometimes be more important.
