The medical college of Three Gorges University, formerly known as Hubei Public Medical College, was established in 1949. After that, it experienced several development stages, such as Wuchang Medical College, Yichang Medical College and Hubei Three Gorges University Medical College. During the junior college, the college has set up clinical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, maternal and child health care, medical examination, medical imaging, nursing and other majors. After the resumption of college entrance examination, 1977 and 1978 enrolled four-year undergraduate students majoring in clinical medicine and traditional Chinese medicine for two consecutive years. 1993, the school began to co-organize a five-year undergraduate major in clinical medicine with the former Hubei Medical University. After 1995, five-year undergraduate students majoring in clinical medicine and medical imaging were recruited independently, after 1996, five-year undergraduate students majoring in traditional Chinese medicine (integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine) were recruited, and five-year undergraduate students majoring in nursing were recruited in 2002.
